My friends Gary and Phil at Fogelson-Lubliner are designing a book for Japanther. I am stoked to be doing a bunch of lettering for it. Here is an ad we did in advance for the book. I did the lettering and they layed out the rest.

Ace Hotel New York
March 29, 2009 · Leave a Comment
I did three paintings on canvas for the new Ace Hotel in Manhattan. It was a fun project. A bunch of other artists completed paintings for the same project, including Matt Hollister, Greg Lamarche, Joe Whiteley, Daniel Albrigo, Soner On, Jeremiah Mandel, and more. The three paintings I did ranged in size from 6′8″ x 8′6″ to 10′4″ x 8′6″. Here are two cell phone shots of them being hung. I’ll post better photos later on.

I have a piece in The New York Times tomorrow. I always enjoy doing these pieces. The turn around is fast, and you only end up having a couple of hours to make a piece and send it out. This doesn’t leave much time to overthink decisions and put off logical choices. I enjoy that. This piece correlates with the letters in response to an article by David Brooks. I tried to turn this into a chance to use a Stevie Wonder quote, but that didn’t go over. You can read the article HERE. Thanks Kim.
Here is what I came up with:

I also did this simpler version in case they didn’t like the other one:

Luke Barber-Smith

My friend Luke Barber-Smith always makes work that impresses me. His studio is just down the street from mine and I often find myself taking work breaks over there. Its a good place to do some stretching, listen to some jams, and enjoy the sun. He has a good head on his shoulders, and his outlook on life shows through in the work that he seems to be constantly producing.
